Hackers – Synapse
Hack the Criminal Minds to Solve Grimes
POV
Procedural, investigation-forward.
The audience experiences cases through the hackers as they work the problem in real time, following digital breadcrumbs across systems, networks, and human behavior.
Story Engine
Each episode follows a high-stakes cybercrime already in motion.
The team races to reconstruct what happened, who is responsible, and where the next move will land before irreversible damage occurs.
The clock is always against them.
Antagonist
Criminals operating through technology.
Organized cybercrime, state-backed actors, lone operators, and hybrid threats who exploit systems faster than institutions can respond.
Stakes
Failure means the crime succeeds.
Money vanishes, infrastructure fails, lives are disrupted, or critical systems are compromised because the team did not move fast enough.
Core Ensemble
A focused team of elite hackers and cyber investigators who work together daily.
Each member brings a distinct technical specialty, and cases require them to collaborate under pressure rather than rotate in and out.
Market Positioning
A high-action crime procedural built on cognitive hacking.
Blends the investigative clarity of CSI and NCIS with the predictive urgency of Minority Report and the time-pressure mechanics of Response Time.
Why Now
Cybercrime is no longer abstract or invisible.
It affects banks, hospitals, infrastructure, and everyday people, and most audiences know they are already exposed.
This show makes that threat legible.
The most heinous crimes go without solving as some criminal minds are so devious that calculating their moves becomes impossible with so many variables. The FBI for years has relied on criminal psychologists but even they can’t advise quick enough or in the fidelity needed to stop today’s high-tech, advanced engineered crimes. The hacker community has been helping from a data intelligence perspective, but it wasn’t until hacker DB9 (so named for his super fast hacking skills) demonstrated the ability to hack synapsis and produce a low fidelity, but in real time, actionable information, thus giving the FBI much quicker reaction times. However, there is a very small window from the commitment of a crime to being able to read the crime by scanning as any people as you can for clues and adding them to the data model. Currently, DB9 can only hack short-term memories during the conversion process to explicit memories. It is the data within the transfer route to the neocortex or amygdala that can be read. Like hacking a data bus in a computer system.
The ultimate hack is getting close enough to the criminals to read them. That proves to be very difficult, however, DB9 is working on a hack that allows him to use the brains of witnesses as routers allowing him to hop minds. If the criminal is within a few hops, he may be able to hack in. Presuming the witnesses can remember certain details of the criminals and those details can connect to the same details in other witnesses, you can build a data model that may include the criminal’s mind. But as soon as the short-term memory is transferred, or lossed, the ‘bus’ is cleared for other data. So time is crucial. Brain Hacking is evolving in capability and fidelity. Keeping this technology from criminals is crucial for as soon as they know brains can actively be hacked they can start putting junk data into the data model, much like the mentalist Derren Brown does, or worse.
The Seasonal Twin Strategy
A Year-Round Programming Cycle
This structure provides a seamless transition for the audience. The focus shifts from the cerebral, internal battleground of the mind to the visceral, external battleground of tactical response.
The Winter/Spring Cycle (Synapse): This phase focuses on “The Intel.” It is a high-tech procedural centered on cognitive hacking, digital breadcrumbs, and the race to stop crimes before the short-term memory bus clears.
The Summer/Fall Cycle (Response Time): This phase focuses on “The Impact.” It is a tactical response era where seconds are critical and plans are disposable as teams drop into the most dangerous physical zones on the planet.
Production Efficiency and Audience Retention
By staggering these shows, a network can maintain a consistent viewer base and reduce the subscriber churn often seen between seasons.
Shared Creative Identity: Using a single visionary team ensures the franchise maintains its signature pacing and near-future realism. This encourages fans of one series to naturally transition into the other.
Narrative Independence: Because the shows are set differently and do not require crossovers, new viewers can jump into either series at any point. Dedicated fans will still appreciate the shared technological lore of the overarching world.
